The Garnet family comprises of differently coloured minerals with similar crystal structure and chemical composition. Some of the representatives of the Garnet family are Pyrope, Almandite, Spessartite and Grossularite.
The name Garnet is derived from the Latin word for grain due to its rounded crystals and similarity to the red seed covers of a pomegranate.
Garnets come in a variety of colours including yellow, orange and green. The most widely known colour of Garnet would be dark red. When the term “Garnet” is used, it is usually connotative of the dark red form. Other colour Garnets are usually given more descriptive gemstone terms such as the Tsavorite Garnet.
While we appreciate all types of Garnets, including the fiery looking Spessartite Garnet, we personally have a soft spot for the rose-red Garnet known as Rhodolite Garnet.
Rhodolite Garnets have a lighter tone and more purplish colour than typical Garnet gemstones. It is often regarded as a variety of the mineral Pyrope.
